Sermon Focus: “What is this?”
Key Verse: “They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
(Mark 1: 21-22)
- What do you think the Gospel writer means when he says that Jesus taught as one having authority? And why would they be astonished?
- What do you think Jesus was teaching that day?
Can you bring to mind something that someone taught you that made all the difference in your life? The teaching of Jesus made all the difference in the lives of the people he encountered. Jesus still has the ability to change hearts and minds so that lives are transformed. Perhaps this is the authority the Gospel writer speaks of. Jesus’ teaching was focused on the reign of God as it should be in the world. How can we learn and be transformed by this teacher with authority?
