Transfiguration

Please read Matthew 17: 1-9 and use these notes to prepare for Sunday morning worship.

Sermon Focus: The Transfiguration

Key Verse: “While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”.” (Matthew 17: 5)

  • This echoes the proclamation made at Jesus baptism. Again, God is confirming who Jesus is for the world.  As we listen to Jesus, what words would you use to describe him?
  • How can you take the time to listen more carefully to the words of Jesus and the voice of God?

Key Verse:   “As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”” (Matthew 17: 9)

  • Why do you think that Jesus would order the disciples not to tell anyone about the vision?

The Transfiguration is the recognition of the divine at work in and through Jesus.  It is a Sunday to confirm whom it is we worship just before we enter the season of Lent.  Perhaps to remind us of the power of God at work in our lives as we seek transform our spiritual lives to reflect more of the glory of God in the world.
