Sermon Focus: Covenant Keeping – Global Guarantee

Key Verse:I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13

Reflection Questions:

  • The rainbow has been a symbol of covenant for generations. It brings hope to many people still today. It has especially been a symbol of hope for the LGBTQ community in recent years. Why do you think there is so much hope found in this symbol of the first covenant?
  • What does this covenant teach us about the nature of God? How does this affect your understanding of God in your life?

Connection for Today:

The Noahic Covenant is sealed with a bow in the sky. It stands as a promise of hope not only for Noah but for the world today. Even now, we worry about the destruction of the world whether from nuclear war, global warming, or other means. Yet the promise made in this first covenant offers us hope that God has regarded all living creatures and promises to care for creation and not allow it to be destroyed. However, God’s providence offered in this covenant is not just one-sided. God calls us to be agents of the covenant by helping to care for creation and preventing its destruction. Perhaps you can partner with God by engaging in activism against nuclear war, global warming, or other harmful/destructive forces in our world.  May we continue to find hope in God’s promises.
